This week, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has officially confirmed exploring NFT integration within the platform this year. The news came days after fellow social media giants Meta (ex-Facebook) and Twitter tapped into NFTs too.
YouTube joins the NFT trend in 2022
Last year, we’ve witnessed an NFT boom that convinced plenty of mainstream companies and big names of every industry to join the trend. The latest platform to plan NFT integration is YouTube, as Chief Executive Officer Susan Wojcicki confirmed in a letter:
“We’re always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators capitalize on emerging technologies, including things like NFTs,” she said. The company also has plans to “continue to strengthen and enhance the experiences that creators and fans have on YouTube.”
In the same statement, Wojcicki revealed that the company will prioritize shopping, gaming, and music videos. The YouTube Shorts feature will also benefit from upgrades after generating +5 trillion video views in a matter of months. This feature allowed users to create 60-second videos on their smartphones for the YouTube mobile app.
Depending on how NFTs will be integrated within YouTube, the issue of content ownership might be addressed properly.
Social media giants are embracing the NFT market
Of course, YouTube is just one of the many social media giants tapping into NFTs. Shortly after its controversial rebrand, Meta seems to dive right into the heart of the market.
Accordingly, the giant company’s NFT integration process is still in its early stages. Considering its plans to develop an innovative metaverse, though, we should expect to see NFTs slowly – but surely – included in the current core features of both Instagram and Facebook.
Meanwhile, Twitter has already made the first step in this direction. The platform’s latest NFT feature allows collectors to upload their own digital assets as profile pictures by connecting their digital wallets.
