Let’s get phygital. Warner Bros appears to have caught up with the latest trend in the NFT space. Physical products merging with the digital is apparently the way to go. Recently, the company has announced its launch of DC NFT trading cards. It’s a hybrid collection with redeemable NFTs, featuring DC favorites such as Batman.
A DC Comics NFT Collection
The entertainment giant is working with Cartamundi Group to launch the trading cards. The theme, to fans’ delight, centers on DC Comics.
We know Cartamundi as a trusted manufacturer of card and board games. It will design the cards, painting them with 155 different superheroes.
The “hybrid” cards they’re creating will feature redeemable NFT collectibles. The NFT part of the product is something Immutable will take care of.
Yes, the redeemable DC NFTs will live on Immutable X. It’s a layer 2 (L2) protocol, a sidechain to Ethereum. It’s known to support heavy blockchain games such as Gods Unchained.
To cater better to fans, Warner Bros will release the DC collectibles through a new platform. They’re calling it the Hro app, which seems to refer to the hero-themed collection. The application will allow fans to access the physical cards’ NFTs.
Batman to Star the DC NFT Trading Cards
Warners Bros also reveals that “The Batman” will not miss the chance to be part of the card collection.
Fans may buy Batman’s card among the hybrid packs for anywhere between $5 and $120. They can also watch out for limited-edition content via the Hro app later in the year.
The DC NFT trading cards will start landing on digital wallets in March 2022. To serve its wide fanbase, DC will release a whopping 6 million of these cards.
Nonetheless, it’s not the company’s first time to drop NFTs inspired by DC heroes.
DC Comics has already worked with Veve Collectibles in 2021. Together, they’ve released NFT collectibles that highlighted top comic book characters.
Warner Bros has also been dropping NFT collections from movies such as The Matrix. Another group of collectibles was their Space Jam NFTs.
To date, NFT releases seemed to have raised the bar for the DC and Warner Bros brands.
It has provided fans “a whole new way to engage with their favorite characters,” says Pam Lifford. She’s the president of Warnermedia’s Global Brands and Experiences department.
To DC, NFT trading cards will also help fans interact more with fellow collectors.
In mid-October last year, DC Comics claimed to have issued “the largest NFT drop ever.” But the claim, no matter how bold it sounded, may not impress competitor Marvel’s fans. To recall, Marvel has also been dropping superhero and supervillain NFTs since 2021.
It looks like the fight between Marvel and DC isn’t ending anytime soon. Both multiverses are even trying to cross the metaverse, now in a web of drama and fan service through NFTs.
