Legendary film director Spike Lee will be launching a collection of NFTs linked to his 1986 film “She’s Gotta Have It.” Lee will be releasing this collection in collaboration with The Visible Project and Habitat Labs.
In total, there will be 3945 NFTs, which will feature frame-by-frame stills of Mars Blackmon – played by Lee himself. The collection will also include additional artworks by Tré Seals and Adrian Franks. Interestingly, the NFTs will also feature unique generative characteristics inspired by the film.
The NFTs also mark Spike Lee’s tenure as the chairman of The Visible Project. This project will serve as a democratized content incubator of the new age powered by NFTs. Furthermore, it will help filmmakers enter Web3 through the NFT space. Additionally, The Visible Project will also dedicate a portion of each sale to supporting the next generation of filmmakers.
Habitat Labs’ Eliot Greene also commented on the collaboration: “We are proud to partner with Spike Lee in his efforts to build a lasting legacy that empowers artists of the next generation. This revolutionary collection and initiative will bring a tremendous amount of impact for NFTs within ‘traditional’ entertainment. We are forging a new kind of marketplace; where collectors will own a piece of classic cinema history and have the opportunity to fund and greenlight real projects.”
Lee owns and controls the rights to “She’s Gotta Have It.” Therefore, he will not have any copyright or licensing problems with the release of these NFTs. The same cannot be said of Quentin Tarantino, who faced legal problems after announcing NFTs. Miramax filed a lawsuit against Tarantino for copyright infringement after the filmmaker announced Pulp Fiction NFTs.
