Yet another person has fallen victim to the latest phishing NFT scam. This time it is @BlackAppleArt who has lost three Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs, worth an estimated $900,000. This awful news is the latest in a long line of multiple scams and hacks targeting NFT holders.
In total, @BlackAppleArt has lost three BAYC NFTs. This was first reported by @Zachxbt in a tweet last night. The hacker sent the ETH profits to Tornado, the decentralized protocol for private transactions on Ethereum.
How did the NFT scam happen?
The scam is complex but not avoidable. In this instance, it appears to have happened due to the owner connecting their wallet to a website offering “animated” versions of the BAYC/MAYC club.
Once owners link their wallets to a site like this, their NFTs are fully exposed. Although not confirmed, a tweet leading to this website is in @BlackAppleArt recent likes on Twitter. Either way, it is unfortunate and disgusting that these scams are still occurring.
Phishing NFT scams are rising again, and they take no prisoners. They use Tornado as it is untraceable. You should never connect your wallet to a random site you do not trust, and be vigilant in your security. Basically, if this happens, you will probably never see your NFTs again or get your money back.
Unfortunately, NFT scams aren’t going anywhere and will only get more complicated. The best thing you can do is follow best practices and keep your eyes open for these scammers.
