A Playboy covergirl’s NFT drop has failed to make a huge splash, if sales figures are much to go by. Sarah McDaniel appeared on the front page of the iconic magazine in 2016. Skip forward to 2021 and she released a collection of 82 non-fungible tokens. Sadly, though, only five have been picked up at the time of writing. But is there more to the story? Perhaps the creator’s track record can shine some light.
Back in March 2016, Playboy ran its first non-nude issue, with McDaniel on the cover. A bold step for everyone involved, immediately this suggests the model isn’t your average front-of-camera type. Her all-natural image was followed by a shift in career, as she found herself commissioned by the likes of Huffington Post as a columnist. A budding journalist was beginning to get established. Not to mention an artist and filmmaker.
Her first video work was ‘Kerfuffle’, made alongside Courtney Carter who has also partnered on this new series. The animated, seven-minute short became the first of its kind to be sold as an NFT. It went for 1 ETH on OpenSea, after being added to the Brainfeeder Films Collection. It focuses on the battle between the self and a darker self, imagining what it means to live in fear and anxiety. So not that different from the past 20 months, then. This latest drop is based on characters from the film.
So Why Was the Playboy Covergirl NFT Series Not Supposed to Sell (Quickly)?
“My first NFT drop sold out in seconds because it leveraged my image and notoriety in the modeling world,” McDaniel said. “But the ‘Kerfuffle’ drop has artistic power. It spotlights the empty culture and false beauty standards that generate a darker side to our society.”
Simply put, then, this collection wasn’t supposed to move quickly. Instead, it was about making people think about what moves them.
Dropping on the Portion.io marketplace, whether more will be bought in the coming weeks isn’t clear. However, we’re increasingly aware of how many NFT art collections are trying to ask us questions. For example, Damien Hirst‘s spot paintings, and The N Project.
