Opensea has finally issued a statement regarding the platform’s ban on Iranian users. The platform cites US sanctions as the primary reason (see picture).
How did the community react to OpenSea’s statement Concerning US sanctions on Iran?
The above statement welcomed a huge discussion within the NFT community on whether OpenSea is right with its step or not.
For instance, Twitter user @wildalps claims that the artworks fall under the category of the information material. Thus, prohibition should not apply. She shared screenshots of laws and regulations pertaining to sanctions.
Another user, @mondoir, brought up the point that the Web 3 platform, particularly OpenSea, is far from decentralized.
Famous artist, Parin Heidari was among the top female artists on OpenSea a few weeks back. Unfortunately, the platform has banned her due to US sanction laws. She asked “When I was featured on your homepage and verified. Was my nationality any different? I guess I’ve always been Iranian by blood.”
A representative for the marketplace told CoinDesk in a statement, “OpenSea blocks users and territories on the list from using our services, including buying, selling, or transferring NFTs on OpenSea. If we find individuals to be in violation of our sanctions policy, we take swift action to ban the associated accounts.”
Basically, US sanction laws state that American companies will not provide goods and services to any user in a sanctioned country. The US sanction list includes Iran, North Korea, Syria and Russia.
Also, Metamask users in Venezuela became locked out of their wallets following the US’s new sanctions set on parts of Ukraine
