NFTs Honoring NASCAR’s First Black Racing Driver, Wendell Scott, Arrive

A series of NFTs celebrating NASCAR legend Wendell Scott has launched on Nifty Gateway. Scott is famous for being the first African-American NASCAR driver. Wendell Scott Ventures partnered with Worldwide XR, CMG Worldwide, and VueXR on the NFTs.

3D AR NFTs honor Wendell Scott, an American sports icon

The series of Wendell Scott NFTs launched on Nifty Gateway on March 6th. To clarify, the series includes two 1-of-1 NFTs, the auction for which has now ended. Firstly, there’s an exact 1:1 replica of Wendell Scott‘s first-ever NASCAR winning 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air. Significantly, this marks Nifty Gateway’s first time releasing a 3D Augmented Reality (AR) digital car on their platform.

The second 1-of-1 NFT is a 3D AR version of Wendell Scott’s trophy from his 1963 Cup Series victory. Interestingly, Scott never received the trophy while he was alive. Given the prevalence of extreme racism in the US in 1963, Scott met a chorus of racial abuse and protest when he won the race. This despite the fact that Scott actually ran two more laps than the rest of the field and still won! The trophy was finally, posthumously awarded to Scott’s family in 2021.

There are two other, 100-edition NFTs in the collection. One is the Wendell Scott: Gold Medallion NFT. There is also a special Trailblazers NFT featuring Scott, Jackie Robinson, and Arthur Ashe. Notably, the Trailblazers NFT features two other legendary African-American athletes who made history in their sports.

To explain, Jackie Robinson broke the MLB’s color barrier by becoming the first Black professional baseball player. By the same token, Arthur Ashe was the first Black tennis player selected to the United States Davis Cup team. What’s more, Ashe is the only black man ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon, and the US Open and Australian Open.

All in all, the Wendell Scott NFTs are part of an increasing trend. Namely, the immortalization of historic sports figures on the blockchain. Not only that, but it also continues NASCAR’s involvement in NFTs.
