NFT carbon sponges are here, and they will help us save the planet. The effects of cryptocurrency and NFTs on the environment are the subject of a lot of talk at the moment. Many are concerned about the carbon footprint of crypto and the damage it can cause, rightly so.
However, two inspirational New Zealand women Leanne Bats and Jussara Bierman, are challenging how we view NFTs.
Bats and Bierman are launching 100 NFTs, selling for $1000 (NZ$1477) on 21st December. Each NFT forms part of a map, called ‘The Island’, created by Wellington artist T-Wei.
NFT carbon sponge utility
Furthermore, each NFT has a great utility attached to it. Every single one will fund the removal of one tonne of carbon from the atmosphere. Additionally, they will use the royalties to support further carbon removal. This is the first island, and the next one will consist of 1000 NFTs. Basically, each NFT will act as a carbon sponge, funding the utility built into it. As well as this, the NFTs are launching on Solana, which many consider more eco-friendy.
Bats stated the reason for the calling them sponges as, “So as these things are bought, sold, traded, they have more impact. We call them little digital carbon sponges, and really what we’d like to do if all goes well is build this place in the metaverse one day.
Finally, the carbon sponge is a brilliant use case for the possibilities of NFTs. It is an essential step in helping to heal the planet using technology. Maybe NFTs can help to save the future?
