Acclaimed NFT artist, Pak has released a first-of-its-kind, month-long NFT project called Mass.Black. According to the artist, this is the first Mass.Black event and more will follow suit. He described this as “an unusual treasure hunt”, where everyone has a month to play. In other words, the event will be live till April 30.
“to move is to live,” Pak tweeted on April 1. “welcome to the first mass.black event Matter*. You have one month to play.” Brace yourself as we explain how this treasure hunt works.
First things first: Some background on Pak’s Merge NFT drop
Back in December 2021, Pak broke all NFT sales records after his drop ‘The Merge’ sold for a whopping $91.8 million. It is this drop that forms the basis for Pak’s Mass.Black NFT project. As Pak explained, “Merge is a single artwork distributed across many tokens, not a collection of artworks”. Basically, Merge is an open edition artwork where people buy tokens (masses or m tokens) that are units of mass.
Now, here’s the fun bit—two mass tokens within a person’s wallet will merge into a single NFT. This NFT will have the combined mass value of the first two tokens and will also visually grow bigger. In addition, the smart contract mechanism will burn the token with a smaller mass.
Ultimately, the number of Merge NFTs change based on the number of users. Although unlikely, Merge could theoretically even become a 1/1 NFT in the long-term.
What is Mass.Black?
Cut to today, in Pak’s first Mass.Black event, all Merge NFT holders can compete for “Matter” tokens. Reportedly, there are over 1409 tokens up for grabs, with varying rarities. Holders can claims the tokens through the unique treasure hunt, if they meet certain criteria.
Firstly, the token distribution will happen in two parts. Basically, mass and merges will be sorted in descending order of token IDs. Also, there are a total of 11 tiers in which you can get Matter. Then, everyone with m tokens having four or more merges can claim 750/750 “Matter” tokens called ‘Hunters and Traps’. Next, 450/450 Matter tokens named ‘Scavenger’s Weak Hands’ are for those with 10 and above masses.
The next tier is of 150/150 Matter ‘Cannibalism’ which holders of m tokens with most merges can claim. Then, holders with yellow (t2) m tokens and blue (t3) m tokens with most merges, can get 36/36 ‘Lazy Gold’ and 12/12 ‘Lone Survivors’ Matter tokens, respectively. While 6/6 Matter tokens ‘Kings of the Hill’ are allotted for m tokens with most mass, 3/3 Matter tokens ‘Three Lucky Giants’ are for random winners.
On the other hand, 1/1 ‘Atlas Apprentice’ is for m tokens with the most mass. Lastly, the alpha m holder can claim 1/1 Matter token ‘Titan’. Besides, there are two more tiers that Pak is yet to announce.
Finally, if you are one of the lucky holders to get a Matter token, you can either hold it or burn it.
