We are going back in time with the Vodafone NFT. The world’s first-ever text message has been sold to an unnamed buyer as an NFT for €132,680
On December 3rd, 1992, British engineer John C. Papworth did something that no one had ever done before. He texted his friend via the Vodafone network that said ‘Merry Christmas’. However, this turned out to be anything but simple. In fact, text messages revolutionized how we interact with each other as humans daily.
In 2011, text messages peaked, with over 39.7 billion messages sent in under three months. Eventually, social media and messaging apps like Whatsapp replaced them, but they kept the world connected at one point in time. The Vodafone NFT is a testament to that period.
As we enter this new phase of the digital era, Aguttes Auction House in France decided to auction off the Vodafone text message as an NFT. The money will go to charity. The charity chosen is UNHCR, the UN refugee agency charity.
“The first book ever printed, the first phone conversation, and the first email. These technologies have revolutionized our world and communication,” said Maximilian Aguttes, creator of Auction House. “This first text message received in 1992 is a historical testament to human and technological progress.
Finally, the Vodafone NFT sale is very fitting for the time of year, with the words Merry Christmas immortalized as an NFT now and forever. It will be interesting to see how much the first ever NFT is worth in a few years.
