FC Barcelona is entering the metaverse. The football club reveals their metaverse x NFT plans in a move that will excite football fans. Earlier this week, club president Joan Laporta announced the intention to build a Barcelona metaverse.
During a keynote speech at Mobile World Congress, the President detailed its digital plans for the future.
FC Barcelona is one of the biggest football clubs in the world, with millions of global fans. A trip to the stadium, called Camp Nou, is considered a football pilgrimage. Furthermore, fans travel there every year to see the 99 thousand capacity stadium in all its glory.
This famous football team from Catalonia is exploring how technology can provide growth opportunities. The club embraces virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) for fan experiences. This move has proven to be a huge success, especially with restricted worldwide travel during the last two years.
Now, FC Barcelona is working on a metaverse and an NFT collection. In the keynote speech, Laporta told the conference, “We want to develop our metaverse, our NFTs and all of these new businesses that appear in our world.”
FC Barcelona has undergone some public financial difficulties in the last few years. Last season, they lost their most outstanding player and arguably the best player in football history, Lionel Messi. This was a direct result of the financial structure in place.
Finally, financial rewards aren’t the only reason football clubs enter the NFT and the metaverse space. The connection between football fans and their team is fantastic. With the technology available, it can help to unite them even more.
