Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced at SXSW on March 15 that he’s working to bring NFTs to Instagram. The plan includes turning IG into an NFT marketplace, allowing users to mint NFTs within IG. Exciting as it sounds, the NFT community appears to be divided in their opinions about the move.
The recent SXSW event in Austin brought successful NFT projects together, including the Behr Paint and Doodles collab. Apparently, Zuckerberg’s statements on his plans for the equally colorful app Instagram are much more intriguing.
NFT Community Reactions on the Zuckerberg Instagram Plan
Several NFT creators, investors, and influencers took to Twitter their opinions about the said plans. One Twitter user, The NFT Dude, expresses his concern on how Zuckerberg’s move might benefit or compromise the NFT community.
On a lighter note, Twitter user Mason is just happy to be able to flex his NFTs on Instagram as soon as that’s possible. He’s also suggesting a way to keep NFTs from non-NFT images.
Domagne, a social media NFT app startup, took the Zuckerberg Instagram announcement to heart. His IG NFT plans seem to have validated Domagne’s idea for a social media NFT platform. The main difference between them and Meta is how they’re paying back to their supporters and userbase.
Meanwhile, Twitch streamer Andrew Wang made a great point about the NFT culture being born and raised on Twitter. It seems he’s saying it will be challenging for the NFT community to move entirely to Instagram.
Mark Zuckerberg admits there’s still “a bunch of technical things to get worked out” before the Instagram NFT integration happens. Financial Times had reported how the Meta CEO hopes to display NFTs as profile pictures—something Twitter has already done.
Despite people’s reactions, Zuckerberg is giving Instagram users “the ability to bring some NFTs in.” He says people will “hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment.”
