In what seems to be yet another bug in the OpenSea system, a Bored Ape NFT miraculously sold yesterday without being listed. The rare cheetah fur, pipe-smoking, orange jumpsuit wearing ape somehow sold overnight for 90 ETH, a figure which the owner states is well below the floor value.
The owner, @W1ll1amEth, took to Twitter to seek support, confirming he never listed the ape and never traded wallets. He describes the NFT as his forever bayc and had no intention of selling it. However, it would appear that this is another case of people exploiting the OpenSea bug.
These malicious buys bypass OpenSea and purchase NFTs at previously listed prices.
What does OpenSea plan to do about this bug?
@W1ll1amEth is not the first to succumb to this awful hack. In fact, over the last few weeks, there has been a continuous stream of ongoing hacks across multiple NFT collections.
OpenSea appears to be able to do little about this. It may not seem like much at the moment, but 90 ETH is a lot better than what some Bored Ape NFTs have sold for. One sold for 0.77 ETH due to the hack.
Meanwhile, OpenSea is the biggest NFT platform in the world. They must solve this problem quickly to maintain the credibility of the NFT world. Last Wednesday, OpenSea sent an email to account holders addressing the bug issue.
However, most of the Opensea email focused on reminding users to cancel their old listings and not what they are planning to do to address the stolen NFTs.
Hopefully, there will be further clarification in the coming weeks for people like @W1ll1amEth who have been robbed of their prize NFTs due to this OpenSea bug.
