Animoca Brands, the parent company of The Sandbox, has been on an acquisition spree. This year alone, the company has acquired three game studios. Darewise Entertainment, Eden Games, and Grease Monkey Games make the list. Apparently, the firm is “not done” acquiring game studios.
“We’re not done acquiring,” Yat Siu, Animoca Brands founder and Executive Chairman, told Decrypt. “What we’re looking to do is to acquire companies in different fields of gameplay in which we don’t quite have the exposure.”
Animoca Brands is on an acquisition spree
Apart from being a lead investor in several gaming and NFT startups, Animoca Brands also boasts its own NFT-based games. This includes The Sandbox, REVV Racing, Phantom Galaxies, and Benji Bananas, to name a few. The new acquisitions will help the company expand into various gaming sectors.
Animoca Brands acquired Eden Games early this month for $16 million. A veteran game studio, Eden Games is known for the Need for Speed and Test Drive franchises and the officially licensed Formula One mobile game. Animoca Brands will use Eden Games’ expertise to work on existing as well as new games in the REVV Motorsport ecosystem. In other words, we can expect more blockchain-based racing games from the team.
The acquisition of indie game developer, Grease Monkey too will help Animoca Brands in this regard. After all, Grease Monkey is a motorsport game maker that has developed mobile and PC-based racing games such as Torque Burnout and Torque Drift. Its upcoming Torque Drift 2 will also become a part of the REVV ecosystem.
Finally, Darewise is famous for its massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), Life Beyond. The game will use NFTs as in-game items. Besides, Animoca Brands is also working with Yuga Labs on its Otherside metaverse.
