A few days ago, we saw the launch of the Cipher Punks NFT collection. However, this collection was shut down just after 3 days of its launch.
What was the Cipher Punks’ NFT collection about?
Basically, the NFT collection comprised 450 collectables featuring the fathers of blockchain and cryptocurrency. In fact, these 450 NFTs depicted 45 crypto and decentralization figures and private protectors from the 1970s to the present.
Why was the collection destroyed?
Firstly, the collection stars were unaware that their images were being turned into NFTs. Moreover, the creators of Cipher Punks didn’t ask for any consent from the people featured in the NFTs.
That’s not it; the NFT community also criticized this drop because many featured images were not authorized.
.As a result, the team destroyed the collection, brought back the purchased NFTs from the collectors, and refunded buyers who had already invested.
The creators of Cipher Punk NFT posted an article addressing the whole scenario. They wrote, “Unfortunately, many Cypher Punks were against this idea and didn’t want to participate in any way. We respect that. We really do. So we apologize to each and every Cypher Punk for not taking consent and creating your NFTs.”
This story again showcases the issue of copyright and image rights infringement in the NFT industry. Just recently, we saw the launch of PAYC (Phunky Ape Yacht Club) and PHAYC, which are two parody NFT projects imitating the original BAYC. Since there are no laws to establish a systematic procedure, we can expect more such cases in the future.
