Gary Vee addressed how name-dropping cases are on the rise in the NFT space. In fact, he shared a screenshot of someone asking if he claimed a particular drop, as their NFT team was using Gary Vee’s name to establish their brand image. Although we cannot see this NFT project’s name properly, according to the little sneak peek available, it is likely the “Bored Camel Caravan Club”.
Actually, name-dropping is the practice of casually mentioning the names of famous people one knows to increase NFT sales. Therefore, NFT projects airdrop their NFTs to celebrities or influencers as part of their marketing strategy.
Gary Vee and Name dropping in NFT industry
Following Gary’s post on Twitter, other NFT enthusiasts have also shared similar experiences. Where NFT projects pursued them to buy their NFTs using Gary Vee or another celebrity’s name. The NFT enthusiast Rabidus (0xRabidus) wrote ‘The number of shitty projects people have tried to get me to buy because Gary Vee is bought into them!” is ridiculous. More often than not, he hasn’t, and if he has, it’s a long-term hold. That may or may not take off, as he has stated many times. Doesn’t always mean endorsement.”
Currently, there’s no available method to hide these transactions. Moreover, airdropped NFTs still show as minted even after one keeps these received tokens in the hidden folder.
Additionally, Twitter user @NFTherder mentioned that the wallets of Pransky and CozomoMedici are also the major victims of the name-dropping scam.
Let’s see if blockchain technology comes with a better system to prevent these ongoing scams. Till then, be careful and stay tuned!
