Wikipedia’s first ever edit on its homepage has been sold as an NFT for $750,000. In addition, Jimmy Wales’ Strawberry iMac that was used during that time sold for $187,500. The Christie’s auction took place from the 3rd of December until the 15th. Wales plans to use the proceeds for his ad-free social media project, WT.Social.
Wikipedia is one of the most visited websites globally. The website hosts more than 6.4 billion articles. Not surprisingly, the bids for both NFTs started from $100 and has ballooned quickly since the auction started.
EditThisNFT
The NFT of the very first Wikipedia edit: ‘Hello,World!’ was designed based on the original 2001 website layout and source code. In addition, the NFT has a dynamic feature that allows the new owner to edit the page. Subsequently, the page will be reverted to its original state after the preset timer (5 minutes) runs out.
This feature allows future buyers to experience his concerns in the past where malicious users would often mess up entries. Jimmy then added bots to the site to revert these entries to its original state. The Wikipedia creator is also willing to transfer the domain name and offer technical assistance to future buyers.
20 years later, Jimmy is now focusing on his next venture: WT.Social. This platform will attempt to offer users a healthier and non-toxic social media platform. The ad-free platform will also work to support other charities that promote free culture.
