GSC Game World, the developers behind the game Stalker 2: The heart of Chernobyl, has announced the game will include NFTs. Although not much is known about the NFTs, one will enable a player to become an NPC in-game. The developers have teamed up with Dmarket to auction the NFT, which will go on sale in February 2022.
Stalker 2 Introduces NFTs
Stalker 2: The heart of Chernobyl is a video game developed by GSC Game World for the Xbox. The game is the second title in the Stalker series. Stalker 2 is due for release in April next year and will include a range of NFTs. The NFTs will be part of what the developers call the Stalker Metaverse.
Currently, GSC Game World has only revealed one of these NFTs: a Metahuman; a fully rendered NPC in-game. It will allow one lucky person to get themselves in the game with the developers using NFTs to recreate these Metahuman NPC’s.
To become a Metahuman, you need to own a specific NFT. Dmarket will auction the NFT in January 2022. The winner will enable themselves to become an NPC in the game. Similarly, GSC Game World also plans to reveal and release more NFTs within Stalker 2.
Stalker 2: The heart of Chernobyl is a first-person shooter survival horror game and one of the lesser know shooters in the video game market. There have been four titles in the series, with the first game shadow of Chernobyl launching in 2007. As a result, the series is around 15 years old.
A new Path for Console Gaming
The most recent game in the franchise, Call of Pripyat released in 2009, making the next release in 2022 a soft reboot for the series. Stalker 2 will be one of the main Xbox titles next year, with the game being a tentpole for the company. Therefore, it is unsurprising to see Stalker 2 adopt NFTs.
NFTs are becoming more popular. Its popularity will help bolster Stalker 2 when it releases next February. Likewise, although Xbox did not openly state that they would be adopting NFTs, the company did comment that they would be supporting creative ways to engage with their communities. Therefore, the Stalker NFTs look like a way for the company to test the waters.
Furthermore, the addition of NFTs to Stalker shows that the mainstream video game industry is warming up to the idea of NFTs. Stalker 2 is one example of how big console games are beginning to adopt NFTs. In the future, more games will start to adopt non-fungible tokens. Thus, it is not long before NFTs fully take over the gaming space.
