Controversial app, Parler is back, as the alt-right’s NFT platform

The controversial social media app Parler is expanding into the NFT world. Parler is the home of so-called “free speech” and has a massive connection with the alt-right. It became notorious in January 2021, following the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol. Protestors who disliked the outcome of the election tried to overrun the building.

Parler was instrumental in planning the attack, with users plotting online. As a result, it was shut down. Major technology platforms, including Apple and Google, refused to host the site.

Last week, former U.S. first lady Melania Trump teamed up with Parler to launch her own NFT and blockchain technology venture. Former U.S. President Donald Trump is one of the biggest and well-known names on Parler. Trump turned to Parler after being kicked off Twitter.

Parler NFT collections in the pipeline

Additionally, Parler claims to be a free speech, alt-tech alternative to popular social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. However, free speech doesn’t mean hate speech. Parler is home to far-right content, including racism, antisemitism and baseless Q-Anon conspiracy theories.

The Melania Trump NFTs are just the beginning, and Parler intends to expand its collection. The company said, “Parler will continue building its digital offering with an NFT pipeline that builds communities and fosters creativity while furthering its commitment to free speech and security.”

Interestingly, Parler doesn’t consider all speech free. People criticising the platform have found themselves banned.

Finally, with companies like Parler entering the NFT space, we must remember that we are building an inclusive digital world. The NFT space should be a place for everyone to feel safe. We need to ensure that everyone remains free from judgement and hatred. It is up to us to make sure it stays that way.
