Institution officials confirmed that the University of the Philippines Twitter account was compromised yesterday. NFT scammers were behind the attack and they renamed the Twitter account after contemporary artist “Takashi Murakami.” Takashi recently released his NFT collection called Murakami Flowers which is doing extremely well and has a floor of 6.6 ETH.
The Tweets from the hacked account were promoting fake airdrops to the Murakami Flowers collection. The report claimed that the bad actor was promoting “free” NFTs, just requiring gas payments.
Since the tweets were released, they have now been removed from Twitter. However, NFT scammers highjacking Twitter accounts seems to be a recurring theme.
University of the Philippines Account Hackers promote NFT Scam
Accounts with major followings have been the target of hackers leading to most oftentimes a scam NFT giveaway. People seem to keep falling for these as no one can relay the message that an account has been hacked before it’s too late. The NFT community needs to keep reiterating to never click any links without triple checking them.
A recent scam happened where Bored Ape Yacht Club’s official Instagram account was hacked. Further, $2.8M worth of BAYC assets were stolen in this hack.
Twitter and Discord accounts that don’t enable 2FA are more likely to get hacked. Further, that is why it is preached in the NFT space to use 2-factor authentication and never ever connect to any unknown links.
The University of the Philippines communications team was quick to respond to the hack. Consequently, NFTers were able to see the messaging and not fall for the scam. Moreover, there is no official stat on if anyone fell for the false mint link, but as of right now it doesn’t seem significant in terms of those affected.
