Not everyone gets the privilege to move freely in the real world. But now, you can do so in the virtual world! In partnership with Degree, Decentraland will host the first-ever marathon in the metaverse next week. Titled as “Degree Metathon”, the run will take place at Genesis Plaza in Decentraland, starting from Tuesday 26 April, at 10 pm UTC until 27 April at 10 pm UTC.
The first marathon in the metaverse at Decentraland: What you need to know
For a start, the marathon aims to foster a more inclusive movement in Decentraland. The idea is that everyone should be free to move in the virtual world as well as in the real world. On that matter, Degree has designed a wheelchair-friendly course for the race, which is compatible with adaptive devices.
Other than that, runners get to run alongside famous athletes and celebrities. This includes Paralympic track medalist Blake Leeper, para-snowboarder Amy Purdy, pro-footballer Hector Herrera, and rapper Fat Joe. Throughout the marathon in Decentraland, you will get to discover their inspiring stories to conquer barriers to movement.
Indeed, as the metaverse grows in scale, inclusion has become a key topic in this space. The good news is that Decentraland has been championing inclusion in different forms all this while. Early this month, the platform partnered with Closeup to host metaverse marriages. This is especially so for couples being denied the right to marry in the real world. Back in March, Decentraland hosted a giant fashion week featuring top companies in the fashion and beauty industries. Fashionistas had the time of their life during the event. Undoubtedly, this upcoming virtual marathon will help Decentraland to widen the scope of its inclusion. So, why not join the run and support free to move in the metaverse!
