LimeWire, the world-famous peer to peer (P2P) file sharing platform, is making a comeback. In an announcement on Twitter, they confirmed they are relaunching and intend to open an NFT music marketplace. This exciting news comes as NFT music gains in popularity.
In addition, several high profile artists are now members of the wider NFT community and are making NFT music. The platform will return for artists in May.
LimeWire is famous for its P2P client, which allowed millions of people to share music online, with others, for free. At one point, along with Napster, it was one of the biggest platforms in the world, even though, pre-2004, it came with monitoring spyware.
Eventually, after several attempts, the authorities shut it down. Now, we have streaming platforms that allow us to listen to music for free and pay the artist.
What next for LimeWire?
What’s more, LimeWire aims to change the NFT music industry and its controversial image. A lengthy Twitter thread explained how they want to “offer a curated marketplace for high-quality digital collectibles, directly offered by your favourite artists. This is something that the market is lacking.”
Meanwhile, it is exciting to see LimeWire entering the expanding NFT music space. They will focus on community and work with creators to ensure complete flexibility, ownership, and control of their content. Finally, LimeWire wants to put the artist first, and most revenue will go towards that. Let’s hope this is the start of something that helps NFT music artists.
