It’s now possible to own a part of the Amazon rainforest as Moss NFTs.
With a Moss Amazon NFT, you’ll have a title to a hectare of the world’s largest rainforest. By owning these NFTs, you’re also committing to a 30-year Amazon conservation service. Moss has factored in 20% of the NFT price for this conservation scheme.
Simply put, you get to help conserve the rainforest alongside the climate tech company. Now that’s a way to actually make use of NFTs in making a difference in the environment!
Why Is Moss Conserving the Amazon with NFTs?
Currently, Amazon falls prey to illegal deforestation. People are buying a piece of the forest for agriculture.
“In the Amazon forested land is very cheap,” says Luis Felipe Adaime, CEO and founder of Moss. According to Adaime, one hectare costs around $100 to $1,000. “If you bought it for $1000, you chop or burn down the trees and usually resell it for about $1,500 per hectare.”
As you might have noticed, the deforested area costs more. That’s because it welcomes planting right away.
If the standing forest continues to sell cheaper than a clearing, “they’re going to burn the whole Amazon.”
Instead of tolerating the practice, Moss made it easier for people to buy and conserve an Amazon area. The company serves as the investor’s intermediary. To Brazilian authorities, Moss will function as the owner of the piece.
The company will then digitize the registration in the blockchain. If you want to “own” a piece of Amazon, you’ll buy the corresponding NFT from Moss. But, there’s one condition: you need to commit “not to destroy the forest and to conserve the area.”
