Billboard and Universal Music are teaming up to launch a collection of curated digital collectibles, called ‘ChartStars’. It is a breathtaking moment for the NFT music industry. These two giant music companies are certainly here to shake things up. The collection of NFTs will launch on Flow, the environmentally friendly blockchain. The first ChartStars NFTs will arrive in May.
ChartStars is Billboard’s first scalable NFT project aimed at music fans. In choosing to partner with Universal Music Group, they have access to a world-class roster of artists. The list includes BTS, Kanye West, Jay Z, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, ABBA, and more.
Furthermore, Universal Music Group (UMG) has embraced NFTs for a while now and understands the landscape. They have seen great success with Curio and a wearable avatar metaverse project. The BAYC music group, Kingship has a contract with 10:22 PM, UMG’s next-gen web3 label.
Billboard and Universal Music Group create NFT project
ChartStars is a collection of artist-focused NFTs commemorating achievements and milestones in the Billboard charts. Amongst these, there will feature songs that debut in the Billboard Top 25 or other noteworthy chart-related successes. Also, songs that stay on the chart for a long time and historic chart records are likely to feature.
These impressive collectibles will feature officially licensed art and also creative aspects such as clips from music videos and album photography.
Significantly, gamification and collecting are part of the platform through leaderboards and challenges. The utility is an essential feature of the ChartStars project, and some of the NFTs will include special access to Billboard live events.
“For the first time, music fans will now have an opportunity to be forever linked to their favourite artists by sharing ownership of a moment in time,” said Julian Holguin, President of Billboard.
ChartStars will feature a vast selection of worldwide artists
Meanwhile, Billboard and UMG have an impressive shared history. UMG is the only company to place in nine of the Top 10 on Billboard’s album chart. No one else has ever achieved this, but UMG has done it nine times. Also, in 2021, UMG set a new chart record for occupying the No. 1 spot for 38 weeks in a row.
Michael Nash, UMG’s Executive Vice President of Digital Strategy, said: “We’re excited to collaborate on this product innovation and open even more avenues for our artists”.
Finally, Billboard will use Unblocked as its NFT technology partner for ChartStars. Anyone wanting to get their hands on one of the unique music ChartStars NFTs can use Cryptocurrency and credit card payments using the Flow platform. Importantly, Dapper Labs supports Unblocked, and they are the hugely successful company that built NBA Top Shot.
