A phishing attack on OpenSea two days ago resulted in losses for nearly 33 NFT owners. Now, one of the OpenSea hack victims is suing the website for the loss of his Bored Ape.
For the uninitiated, hackers tricked users into approving transactions that allowed their wallets to be drained through an elaborate phishing attack.
Can the OpenSea Hack Victim really sue the NFT marketplace?
Apparently yes, since OpenSea is just a Web 2 platform and the integration of it with a wallet allows performing Web 3 tasks. Therefore, OpenSea hack victim McKimmy made his case on the basis of several reasons. Some include defendant security vulnerabilities that allowed an outside party to illegally enter through OpenSea code, forced entry through OpenSea code.
Although Crypto Twitter has mixed opinions about this case. Many are blaming the OpenSea hack victim at fault for not being careful. Simultaneously, stating that his case has weak grounds. While some are welcoming the step.
Twitter user @RicksCEO wrote “Going to be hard to prove any wrongdoing on OPENsea’s part. When you had to give permission to the crook to steal our stuff and opensea was just as much the victim. Best they can hope for is to trace the sales to a Coinbase wallet or some other and see who withdrew the money.”
How did the phishing attack happen?
Basically, phishing is a type of cyber attack in which an attacker sends a fraudulent message. After that, hackers can trick people into disclosing sensitive information. This information can be used to deploy malware or steal things.
Likewise, this phishing attack appears to have taken advantage of a flaw in the Wyvern Protocol. The smart protocol is an open-source and decentralized protocol used by several marketplaces.
Meanwhile, OpenSea CEO Finzer refused to accept claims that this hack led to a loss of $200M.
