CryptoTwitter is accusing Crypto Chicks NFTs of plagiarism and art theft. Now, the NFTs project is trying to pick up the pieces to save the project.
An overview of the art theft scandal
On February 19, 4:38 a.m. GMT, popular Twitter user @NFTtheft called out Crypto Chicks for repeatedly stealing work and never being held accountable. @NFTtheft tweeted: “Do y’all remember this tweet from November? Despite being called out for plagiarism, @NFTCryptoChicks is still around. In fact, this particular piece, which is clearly traced from illustramanda’s 2018 work, recently sold for $28k!”
The user continued: “After hearing that the @NFTCryptoChicks project was built from stolen art, some CC members are now trying to DISCREDIT THE ORIGINAL ARTIST?! As if that artist hasn’t already had to deal with enough, now they are trying to ruin her reputation.”
“This is disgusting behaviour! Most scammers delete their project when they get called out, but this one had spent too much time & money on their grift. So instead of bailing, they spread lies about the artist and weaponized their fans.”
@NFTtheft also points out that the original artist, Illustramanda, posted her work in October 2018. This predates the Crypto Chicks project.
Crypto Chicks’ response to the accusation
Around 45 minutes after @NFTtheft’s first post, Crypto Chicks responded to these claims. The team insisted: “This is news to us, just like this is news to you.”
In addition to the statement of the Crypto Chicks’ main team, the artist behind the Crypto Chicks NFTs, @MsPolly11, also issued her own statement: “I wasn’t familiar with Amanda or other artists who created such original work. I thought these were all images I could learn from.” In the same statement, she also apologised to the community as well as the artists that she has unintentionally copied.
In recent weeks, Crypto Chicks have suffered a series of mishaps. In addition to this alleged art theft, the project’s Discord server fell victim to fraud. Unfortunately, some NFT holders fell for the tricks of fraudsters, prompting the team to investigate the problem.
