The Clipboard Hacker continues its rampage to victimize unsuspecting newbies and even crypto and NFT veterans! This is alarming because this proves that hackers are getting more innovative than ever with how they target users and wallets. Nowadays, the attacks are a mix of social engineering and technical sophistication.
How the Clipboard Hacker Operates
He approached things carefully and conservatively. Learning from all the experts and thought leaders, he started his NFT journey by creating a new metamask wallet about two weeks ago with no real currency in it. Then, he made sure to use a separate browser exclusively for this purpose and secured his seed phrase by not making it accessible anywhere digitally. In addition, he was on high alert to never click any suspicious links at all.
Unfortunately, hackers still found a way to victimize him despite all the precautions. He narrated:
Finally today I was ready to mint my first ever collection. I was going to transfer eth worth 120$ to my wallet. Here’s what I did: Copy my wallet address, paste the address to transfer to from the exchange and confirm transaction. I never received the amount in my wallet.
To his horror, the address the currency was transferred to wasn’t his at all. It is a different crypto wallet address with barely a few characters different from the correct wallet address.
What Happened?
Basically, the scheme was a handiwork of malware. It is an extension scam that can read and change data on the page. Then, it replaces addresses with a hacker’s address when copying and pasting the data.
To prevent similar incidents, you need to manually go through the wallet address even after copying and pasting it. Always check the beginning and end to ensure that you copied it correctly and there are no missing letters. Furthermore, if you have the means, it’s best to have a separate computer strictly for wallets. In Akshay Upadhya‘s case, chances are he unknowingly downloaded malicious extensions and malware.
