An Indian couple is making headlines for their unique wedding. Anil Narasipuram and Shruti Nair got married in November 2021, in what is deemed as India’s first ‘blockchain wedding’. The groom recently narrated the story on social media, grabbing eyeballs. What’s more, a ‘digital priest’ officiated the wedding and the couple even created an NFT with vows written on it!
“We also decided to immortalize our union using blockchain technology,” Narasipuram wrote in a LinkedIn post. He added that owing to the pandemic they wanted to keep the function small. Hence, they held a courthouse wedding, followed by a digital, blockchain wedding.
Blockchain Wedding: “By the power vested in me by Ethereum…”
On November 15, 2021, the couple, hailing from Pune, made their marriage “blockchain official’ in an online ceremony.
“To prepare for the ceremony, both my wife and I had set up Metamask wallets and our digital priest Anoop Pakki minted the NFT on OpenSea and transferred it to me,” the groom wrote. The NFT, called ‘Ekatvam’, featured a photo of the bride’s engagement ring with the vows embedded on the image.
As the couple sat next to each other in front of their laptops, a few of their close friends and family joined in via Google meet. After reading their vows, the groom transferred the NFT to the bride’s digital wallet. Once the transaction was confirmed, the priest pronounced them husband and wise.
Even the priest’s blessings had a blockchain twist: “By the power vested in me by Ethereum, it is my honour and delight to declare you married.”
“The transaction is a permanent, immutable and public record of our commitment to each other on the ETH blockchain,” Narasipuram added. “We may be the first couple married on the blockchain in India (AFAIK), but we certainly won’t be the last. Cryptocurrency and blockchain represent a significant change in the way we transact and the way we trust. This is just the beginning….”
Digital weddings are all the rage
Amid the surging popularity of web3 technologies, an increasing number of couples are holding unique digital wedding ceremonies. Last month, a couple from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu announced a Hogwarts-themed wedding reception in the metaverse.
“I know the future is big in Metaverse…So I thought by conducting an event, everyone in India will know about the technology,” the groom, Dinesh S P, said at the time. Besides, as the bride’s father passed away last year, Dinesh also planned to have his digital avatar during the digital function.
Similarly, last year, a US couple, Rebecca Rose and Peter Kacherginsky, exchanged NFT rings during a traditional Jewish ceremony. They both work at Coinbase and decided to write a smart contract that issued NFTs to their wallets. The NFT, called Tabaat (Hebrew for ring), also featured animation by artist Carl Johan Hasselrot.
“For us, the images of digital rings hidden inside these NFTs will show up in our cryptocurrency wallets as a constant reminder of the permanent bond they represent,” Rebecca tweeted.
