The artist Badiucao, known as the Chinese Banksy, is at it again. This time Badiucao is using a protest against the Beijing Winter Olympics to highlight several human rights issues.
The series of five different NFTs by Badiucao paints a stark picture of China. In fact, The Chinese Banksy now lives in Australia, and it is unclear if he can ever return. The NFTs are part of a project by the Art in Protest residency. Each NFT costs 0.2022 ETH.
This is a unique collaboration between the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts and the Human Rights Foundation. 10% of all proceeds will go towards the Art in Protest residency.
The series of NFTs include an image of a Tibetan monk being shot, a figure skater riding over a red orchid flower, the national symbol of Hong Kong, and a snowboarder on top of a CCTV camera.
The Chinese Banksy describes this as “the Chinese government’s oppression of the Tibetan people, the Uyghur genocide, the dismantling of democracy in Hong Kong, the regime’s omnipresent surveillance systems, and lack of transparency surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic”.
According to the website, each NFT comes with the ability to send your message to the Chinese government. Meanwhile, the collectors of these NFTs can write a statement during the mint. It will live on the blockchain forever.
Finally, the Beijing Winter Olympics is under boycott by several countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and others. China continues to deny any allegations of human rights abuse. However, The United States and others have called the mistreatment of the Uyghur community genocide.
The artist, Chinese Banksy, aims to highlight these issues globally.
