Twitter jury served MeUndies for announcing their partnership with Bored Ape Yacht Club community. Customers were not happy with the decision. Issues ranged from the energy used to mint NFTs to accusations of nazis running Bored Yacht Ape Club.
Who are MeUndies?
MeUndies is one of those companies you have heard of if you listen to podcasts, much like Hello Fresh and Honey. They offer monthly subscriptions for underwear and socks, ranging from one funky design to another. It seems as though this is a new venture for MeUndies. Unfortunately, a lot of their customers are not on board.
What happened with MeUndies?
One Twitter announcement accumulated over 200 replies, mostly complaints. MeUndies decided to join the NFT world, a move many businesses have taken this year. MeUndies stepped into the community with Bored Ape Yacht Club, one of the biggest and most well-known collections out there. As popular as they are, they have not avoided criticism for some good reason.
Why have Bored Ape Yacht Club been accused of racism?
Bored Ape Yacht Club has shown to hide right-wing, nazi propaganda in their designs. For starters, their logo looks incredibly similar to the nazi Waffen Totenkopf. For people unfamiliar, the nazi Waffen Totenkopf was the elite division of the Waffen-SS (army combat branch) of Nazi Germany during World War II. They also create characters wearing colonial items like Kamikaze bands and the Pith helmet. It makes sense as a brand to not want to affiliate with a collection that harbours those symbols.
On top of that, a section of the complaints highlighted the environmental issue surrounding NFTs. Minting takes a lot of power, and that power has got to come from somewhere. Whilst individuals and companies are attempting to bridge this gap, it can’t come soon enough.
Hopefully, a solution will come to the surface for the environmental impact of minting, and Bored Ape Yacht Club will continue to get called out for their imagery.
