Rob Liefeld is launching his latest comic book creation The Defiants as an NFT. This is the first NFT drop from the renowned comic book writer/artist and creator of the Marvel character Deadpool. The Defiants will launch on MakersPlace on January 20th, 2022.
The Defiants marks a first for comic characters in NFTs
The Defiants is a new comic book superhero team that will mark their first appearance in NFTs. The creator of The Defiants, Rob Liefeld, is an accomplished comic book writer who first got his start at Marvel in 1991.
Indeed, it was there that he created iconic characters like Deadpool and Cable, and revived the New Mutants franchise for Marvel. To illustrate, Liefeld’s X-Force #1 is the second highest-selling comic book of all time.
Although he started work on The Defiants years before the emergence of NFTs, Liefeld finally decided that the new medium would be the best way to distribute his new creation.
He spoke on his excitement to bring new characters to life through NFTs in a press release about the NFT drop. He noted, “THE DEFIANTS is an offbeat concept featuring the wildest characters I’ve ever created; I’m thrilled to share their world in the realm of NFT’s.”
To be sure there have been several comic book characters to feature in NFTs so far. However, MakersPlace marks this introduction of an “all-new original set of characters” as a first for NFTs.
To explain, there have been some NFTs that have dropped that featured new comic book characters. But those have generally been from lesser-known, indie comic book creators.
What’s more, there have been other iconic comic book artists selling NFTs. To list, this includes Batman writer, Frank Miller, and MIND MGMT creator Matt Kindt. In contrast to The Defiants though, those NFTs showcased characters who first appeared in print.
MakersPlace adds another iconic artist to its platform
MakersPlace, Liefeld’s partner on the drop, is an NFT marketplace that focuses on digital art. In fact, it was part of the historic Beeple sale that launched NFTs into the mainstream in March 2021.
Another key point about The Defiants NFT drop on MakersPlace is that it will be carbon neutral. To that end, MakersPlace will work with the eco platform Aerial to measure the carbon emissions from the drop.
MakersPlace will then use carbon offset credits, both for forest conservation and for carbon capture. Without a doubt, this will be a relief to any comics fans concerned about the environmental impact of NFTs.
Overall, The Defiants NFT drop is another major example of NFTs as a good home for comic books and their creators. Of course, this continues a trend that began back in 2021.
Most notable are the leading comic book publishers Marvel and DC. The two brands have been selling comic books and collectibles through the platform VeVe for months now.
